But HOW exactly do jewelers create these pieces of artwork? I don’t know about you…but it looks hard (and time-consuming!) to attach hundreds of teeny-tiny beads to gold per square inch!

Wait…didn’t we JUST discuss how soft gold and electrum are?

Well, if gold and electrum (that fancy gold + silver mix we discussed above) are considered soft metals, how did the ancients manage to get those little gold nuggets to not only attach TO the base firmly, but also stay perfectly in place?? Easy! Heat and a little chemistry magic.

Simply put, jewelers cut sheet gold into uniform granules with specialized small-tipped tools. Real magic happens when heat is applied to create powerful bonds between the granules and the jewelry base.

Elbow Grease: Hard Soldering by Hand

Before we talk about the Etruscan methods they used, let’s discuss the most tedious way to attach granules. Brace yourself. It’s called hard soldering.

Essentially the jeweler will use tweezers or a fine paintbrush to pick up and place each granule where they want it to permanently rest. Once in place, the teensy bead is gently pushed into the surface below with slight pressure. This ensures that it won’t budge when dipped in heat.

Next, they take a soldering tip and touch it to where the bead meets the base. The granule and base melt together! Imagine this process for hundreds…maybe even thousands of granules. Oy vey!

No wonder most artisans avoid doing granulation this way.

Yuck: Puddling

Taking it up a notch, granules can be attached using a paste flux mixture. The jewelry artisan coats the base metal with flux and sprinkles granules on top like sprinkles on a cupcake. Then they heat the piece, causing solder in the paste to melt, connecting the granules.

Sounds great…but now you’re left with gross, goopy solder drips all around your beads. That means more work for the jewelry artisan to file and polish the granules free of solder globs. Yuck.

Now this is why the Etruscans were brilliant.

Snuggles: Fusion Bonding Method

Some believe that the talented Etruscans developed a method known as fusion bonding. The key difference between this technique and soldering is that both the base metal and the granules are made from the same alloy of gold.

Jewelry artists brush just enough flux on the base to help the granules stay put after they apply them to the surface. Then the entire piece gets tucked inside a furnace devoid of oxygen. As it reaches the melting point of the gold alloy, the bead magically fuses with the base, right where they make contact.

Since there is no oxygen in the furnace, flux burns away cleanly. You’re left with a perfect bond with no messy solder lines or goopy melted droplets.

Murphy: Colloidal Soldering Technique

Another theory is that the Etruscans were using a technique called colloidal soldering. This technique requires painting on a concoction of gum from plants and copper salts as if it were glue. The gum allows the granules to adhere to the base.

Once in the furnace, the organic material burns away like the flux in the method above. In addition, it leaves behind copper in the areas where granules connect to the base. When the temperature reaches 890°C, copper allows microscopic but mighty strong bonds to form.

This technique works well because it doesn’t take as much heat to granulate, meaning the beads are less likely to melt away before everything solidifies. No matter which technique the Etruscans used, their jewelry skills were next-level awesome.

Keep in mind that if you’re going to be having a short engagement or are stuck planning your wedding within a time frame you don’t have control over, you may not want to procrastinate on planning. Do what you and your partner want to do, and not what you *think* you should be doing.

2. Announce the Engagement

The second thing you should do after getting engaged is tell the world your news. Some couples like to throw their news out to the public as soon as possible, while others wait for the perfect opportunity. (You know, go all soft launch on everyone à la Zendaya or Dua Lipa.) “Tell your close friends and family. Allow them to celebrate this milestone with you. Enjoy your congrats from your inner circle and celebrate with those who matter most in your daily lives,” Taylor recommends.

Still not sure what to do after you get engaged? Start a vision board! One of our favorite parts of planning is looking at wedding photos for inspiration. Whether you browse through Instagram, TikTok, or our favorite wedding planning resource, Pinterest, start collecting ideas that fit your wedding theme. Creating a vision board will allow you to really narrow down your wedding style. Not only will this be fun, but it will be extremely helpful for your vendors when you’re ready to share your wedding vision.

13. Venue Shopping

Once you have your date and theme locked in, you can begin your search for venues. Choose your dream wedding venue. Think about whether you want indoor or outdoor reception, if you want a large venue or more intimate and so on. Visit a few places you’re interested in; no need to commit until you’ve seen different options. You should speak with the vendors about your vision and see if your ideas can come to life at their venue. You don’t want to say “yes” to the first venue you see.

Keep in mind that your venue will also determine your wedding date. Many popular venues book months, if not a year, in advance. Just because you want to get married on December 9th doesn’t mean your dream venue will be available on your special day.

The cut of the stone is very important when looking at engagement ring gems. Also, clarity and color play a big role in choosing your diamond. Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat are known as the 4 Cs of gemstones. The 4Cs are used to determine a gemstone's quality.

White diamonds are a perfect example. You will want to look for a diamond in the near-colorless range (D, E, F) with very, very slightly included or better clarity (VVS+). The higher the carat, the better. As long as you pick a cut she will love, you are good to go. You've probably watched countless videos of people cleaning their jewelry with ultrasonic cleaners—it looks easy and tempting to try. But don't be fooled: not all gemstone jewelry is safe for ultrasonic cleaning. The specific gemstone, metal type, and jewelry setting can make ultrasonic cleaning risky and may damage your pieces.

In this article, we will examine whether ultrasonic cleaners are safe for your gemstone jewelry by analyzing key factors, including gemstone hardness, cleavage, structure, and setting style.

How does Ultrasonic Cleaning work?

For those of you who don’t know, let’s take a moment to explain how these magical machines work. Ultrasonic cleaners work by generating high-frequency sound waves in water. These waves create microscopic bubbles that continuously expand and collapse, a phenomenon known as “cavitation”. The force of this operation effectively removes dirt, oil, and debris from your jewelry at the surface and deep into the little crevices your eyes can’t see.

Factors Determining If You Can Clean Gemstone Jewelry in an Ultrasonic Cleaner

Hardness

Hardness is defined as a gemstone’s resistance to scratches and abrasion. In gemology, we determine hardness using the Mohs scale, with 10 being the highest possible rating. Here’s a general guide for gemstone hardness:

Hardness

·         High (>7)

·         Medium (5-7)

·         Low (<5)

The higher the hardness rating, the greater the gemstone's durability. So, when thinking about which gems you can clean in your ultrasonic cleaner, many people assume that a higher hardness rating means it's safe to clean. This is untrue. While hardness determines how easily your gemstone scratches on the surface, it does not necessarily indicate how resistant it is to breakage.

When you clean your jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner, it will not only create friction on the surface of your gemstone but also cause it to wear down. The ultrasound will also send vibrations through the stone's body. That is why, when discussing whether you can put a gemstone in an ultrasonic cleaner, we also have to talk about toughness.

Toughness is a gemstone's resistance to breakage or fractures. Factors that affect toughness are cleavage and structure. Let’s talk about those two below.

Gemstone Cleavage

Gemstone cleavage refers to the tendency of a mineral crystal to split along defined crystallographic directions when subjected to an external force. Cleavage planes are directions in a crystal where atomic bonds are weaker, causing the mineral to break smoothly along those directions. The newly exposed surface will be smooth and flat because the atomic bonds pulling those ions together are weaker in that direction of the crystal structure.

You can think of cleavage as the identification of the weak layers within a gemstone. All gemstones have some level of cleavage that is generally rated as follows:

·         Perfect Cleavage: Gem can split easily along certain directions, with resulting surfaces being very smooth and flat.

·         Good Cleavage: Gem has a tendency to split along certain directions, with resulting surfaces being relatively smooth.

·         Fair Cleavage: Gem can split when pressure is applied, but is unlikely to do so. Any resulting surfaces will be very uneven.

·         Imperfect Cleavage: Gem does not like to split along certain directions, but when pressured strongly enough, it will show signs of splitting.

·         No Cleavage: Gem will break unevenly. This is known as a fracture.

Since ultrasonic cleaners can produce such a large force in such a small area, they have the potential to make existing cracks larger, create new fractures inside the gemstone, or completely shatter the stone. For these reasons, we do not recommend cleaning gems with perfect or good cleavage in an ultrasonic cleaner. Of course, you should also consider this alongside other factors, such as hardness, but it is a good place to start.

Gemstone Structure

Structure refers to how the internal structure of a gemstone’s crystals is formed. For example, is it porous? Does it have layers? Structure can tell you a lot about a gemstone's integrity and whether it has cracks, inclusions, or other internal flaws.

A porous structure will absorb water while in the ultrasonic cleaner. This can weaken the stone due to its internal voids and cause microcracks on the surface as trapped water evaporates.

Layered stones are prone to peeling or fracturing when vibrated by high-frequency sound waves.

Cracked stones or stones with fragile inclusions can suffer from increased fracturing or localized damage.

Even if a gemstone has high hardness and no cleavage, a loose or porous structure with cracks or inclusions remains unsafe for ultrasonic cleaning. The gem's physical condition, not just its hardness, dictates its vulnerability to ultrasonic damage.

Insight: Keep in mind that such a structure is what dictates hardness and cleavage. The gemstone's structure ultimately determines its physical properties.

Gemstone Treatments

Although the majority of gemstones don’t undergo any changes from when they are mined to when you buy them, some gemstones are treated to improve their appearance. Treatments can include irradiation, heat, or even oils. One common treatment is with emeralds. Emeralds are often treated with oil to fill in the many cracks that are characteristic of emeralds. Oiling helps make the emerald appear softer and more refined. Gemstones can even be treated with heat or irradiation to boost their color.

As a general rule, we do not recommend putting treated gemstones in an ultrasonic cleaner, as it can damage the stone or undo the treatment. When you buy gemstone jewelry, you can always request that the jeweler give you a gemstone report/gemstone certificate. Most gemstone certificates list whether the gemstone has been treated.

Setting Style and Condition

The gemstone's setting style is also very important when determining whether you can clean your jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner. Settings that provide greater protection for the gemstone, such as a bezel or channel, will absorb more vibration and minimize damage to the precious stone. Settings with less protection, such as prongs, can leave your gemstone more susceptible to impact.

You should also consider whether your jewelry is in good condition. If your jewelry is already loose or damaged, you should not put it in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, as the vibrations can cause the stone to dislodge.

Metal Type

Sterling silver, gold (K gold), and platinum jewelry are safe to clean in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Exception: Do not clean gold-plated jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner. The layer of gold on gold-plated jewelry is incredibly thin (less than 0.5 microns). Putting it in an ultrasonic cleaner can cause it to peel, bubble, or discolor. This also goes for white gold. Most white gold jewelry sold is rhodium-plated. Unless your white gold jewelry is not plated, do not put it in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Opal Physical & Chemical Properties

Opal has many wonderful features:

·         Composition: Opal is a form of hydrated silica, which is basically a jelly turned solid. Translation: it contains water. Typically, 6-10% water, but can range up to 20% water or even as low as 3-21% water, depending on the type of opal and origin. These water molecules allow opal to have its play-of-color. However, because water molecules are present inside the gemstone, opal is sensitive to its environment.

·         Hardness: Opals have a hardness of only 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Diamonds rank a 10, sapphire ranks a 9, and quartz ranks an 8 on the scale. Basically, this means opals can be easily scratched or worn down.

·         Structure: Precious opal has a microscopic structure consisting of three-dimensional, disorganized (amorphous) spheres of hydrated silica separated by tiny voids. Amorphous means that it does not have the orderly crystalline structure that other minerals do. When hit, it is more likely to break.

Why Opals Require Special Care

Opals' natural properties make them sensitive to:

·         Scratching: Opals, being softer than most stones, can easily be scratched. Really! Even dust can scratch your opal, yep, you read that right. Friction from wiping your opal with the wrong fabric can cause scratches.

·         Temperate: Due to the water content inside opals, they don’t handle temperature changes well. If you take your opal from extreme cold into a hot tub or sauna, the sudden increase in heat can cause the water inside the opal to expand. Too rapid an expansion can create small cracks on the surface or inside your opal. This is called “crazing”.

·         Dry Out: Opals love their water content and need it to remain intact and to display their play-of-color vividly. If you live in an extremely dry area or subject your opal to too much heat, it can dry out. When opals dry out, they can become crazed and change color or fade.

·         Damage: Opal has a toughness rating of “poor to fair.” Meaning it has a high likelihood of chipping or cracking when struck compared to other gemstones. Because opal jewelry (especially engagement rings) is worn daily, it is susceptible to damage from everyday wear and from being struck by objects.

Opal Type = Different Care & Definitions

Not all opals are cared for the same way. The type of opal you own will determine what you should and should not do when caring for your opal.

Solid Opals (Hydrophane & Non-Hydrophane)

Definition: Opals that are cut and polished from a solid piece of naturally occurring opal without any backing. So, these opals are 100% opal. When it comes to caring for your solid opal, there are two different types of solid opals you should be aware of: hydrophane and non-hydrophane opals. *PRO Tip: all opals we use in Luna Felix Goldsmith custom fine jewelry are solid opals. However, we use both hydrophane and non-hydrophane opals; we take extra precautions to ensure your gemstone lasts a lifetime. If the piece is made with hydrophane opal, we will specifically mark the product as “Ethiopian Opal.”

Hydrophane Opal: Includes crystal opal and hydrophane opal. Ethiopia (specifically the Welo region) is the most common source for hydrophane opals. When hydro liquids come into contact with hydrophane opal, it can temporarily become clear or change color. Some color changes can even be permanent if the liquid had impurities. Proceed with extra care when washing or exposing your hydrophane opal to water.

Non-Hydrophane Opal: This category includes white opal, black opal, fire opal, pink opal, etc. You can usually find non-hydrophane opals in Australia, Brazil, and Mexico. Non-hydrophane opals are generally thought to be non-porous and stable. Meaning it will not absorb moisture or any liquids. The water inside these opals is locked in.

Care: Wash non-hydrophane opals in warm soapy water with a soft brush/cloth. Do not use ultrasound or steam cleaners. Put it into a pouch to avoid scratching. If you live in an extremely dry area, you can prevent crazing by sealing your opal with a cotton ball soaked in water.

Hydrophane Opals: Do not come in contact with water or any liquids. Clean with a dry, soft cloth. Store in a dry area, away from humidity and sudden temperature changes. Never wear while washing your hands, swimming, applying lotion, etc.

How to tell the difference: Drop a few drops of water onto your opal. If the water absorbs into the opal, it’s likely hydrophane. When in doubt, always treat your opal like it is hydrophane. Better safe than sorry!

Assembled Opals (Doublets and Triplets):

Doublets: Thin slice of natural/opathetic opal glued onto dark backing material (commonly black onyx, obsidian, or common opal). The purpose of the backing material is to enhance the appearance of the opal’s color.

Triplets: A triplet is the same as a doublet, but with a clear top layer, typically glass or quartz. This top layer protects the opal and helps show off its color.

Features: Assembled opal layers are bonded with water-soluble or partially water-soluble adhesives.

Care: Do NOT soak in water. Extended exposure to water can break down the adhesive, making the layers peel apart. This will cause your opal to look gray, blurry, or cloudy. You should even remove assembled opal jewelry before washing your hands, showering, swimming, or washing dishes.
